Cannabis in Ancient Greece

The Cannabis plant has a long history of use in medicine dating back thousands of years. Ancient Greece has been known to have influenced the western society and sciences in many profound ways, so it is no surprise that there are mentions of varying uses of cannabis in health-related aspects and clothing.

Specifically, Cannabis was used to dress wounds and sores on horses whereas in humans, dried leaves of cannabis were used to treat nose bleeds, and cannabis seeds were used to expel tapeworms.

Use in the Greek Pharmacopeia

Although Cannabis was referred to for the first timeby Herodotus in the 5thCentury B.C., it was introduced into Greece by the nomadic Scythians and the Hemp plant was highly valued and primarily used for ropes, sails, clothes and other material goods even earlier on.

Despite the lack of conclusive evidence, it is widely believed that Cannabis was used in wine as well as soothing baths, and ancient Greek medical texts make numerous mentions of its use in the Greek Pharmacopeia.
